Citizens for Homeownership

The Colorado Mortgage Lenders Association has established "Citizens for Homeownership" to support candidates to State-level elected office who share our vision of a world of homeownership achieved through the practice of integrity based lending. As a small donor committee, Citizens for Homeownership may accept only personal contributions of no more than $50 per person during any calendar year.

Citizens for Homeownership is a non-partisan committee that will support candidates from both major political parties who appreciate the critical role that mortgage brokers, mortgage bankers and industry service providers offer in fulfilling the American dream of homeownership. As a CMLA member or friend, Citizens for Homeownership welcomes your personal contribution of no more than $50 per year to help promote ethical lending practices and to protect the greatest system of community investment ever to exist: the mortgage lending industry!

Frequently Asked Questions about Citizens for Homeownership:

CanI give more than $50 per year?

No. State law limits contributions to small donor committees to no more than $50 per calendar year from any individual.

Can I pay with a company check?

No. Only personal funds may be accepted by a small donor committee. If we receive a check drawn on a corporate account, we will return the check. Please do not send checks drawn on an account held by a corporation or any other business entity.

Can my spouse/significant other contribute?

Yes. In fact, any person of voting age who is a U.S. citizen may contribute. If two persons share an account, you may send one check for both. Please include the full name of both contributors.

Can all employees of a company contribute?

Yes. Any person of voting age who is a U.S. citizen may contribute, including all employees of a company. However, no corporate funds may be contributed on behalf of any person(s).

Who will receive support from Citizens for Homeownership?

As a non-partisan committee, Citizens for Homeownership will support candidates for the State House of Representatives, State Senate, State Treasurer, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Lieutenant Governor and Governor.

How will candidates be selected?

The CMLA Legislative Committee and Board of Directors will identify candidates who will fight to protect the greatest system of community investment ever to exist: the mortgage lending industry!

Why should I contribute?

Trade unions and professional associations gain significant influence when many people give small amounts. Citizens for Homeownership now offers that opportunity to mortgage brokers, mortgage bankers and industry service providers.

Will my contribution really make a difference?

Yes! In 2002, the citizens of Colorado voted to pass Amendment 27 which changed campaign finance laws in our state. One motivation behind that effort was to return power to the people by limiting corporate dollars and influence in political activities. With that power comes the responsibility for us all to give a little so that our industry - and your career - are well represented within our State government.

Please contribute and encourage your friends, family and business associates to join with Citizens for Homeownership in defending the American dream of homeownership.
