Governor Bill Owens Addresses May CMLA Luncheon

CMLA's 2003-04 monthly luncheon series has featured a host of outstanding industry leaders as well as prominent local figures, thanks to the hard work of Wil Armstrong, vice chairman, CMLA. From top Washington insider Brian Chappelle of Potomac Partners to state regulator Rick O'Donnell and economist Tucker Hart Adams, CMLA luncheons continue to offer an outstanding networking venue as well as inform members and friends of important industry issues. As a highlight to finish the 2003-04 luncheon series, Governor Bill Owens addressed a sellout crowd May 6 at the Plaza Events and Conference Center in Greenwood Village.

In a scenario familiar to many industry participants, Governor Owens drew from his own life experiences as he shared how perceptions of issues can (and often do), differ from reality. From his dealings with the media over deforestation rates and water issues to perceptions about the impact of the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights (TABOR) on current fiscal matters, Governor Owens noted the importance of understanding the entire issue and presenting all sides.

CMLA members enjoyed hearing from Governor Owens during his term as State Treasurer in the mid-1990s. His management of the State budget and his appreciation for the important role of real estate finance are qualities that are appreciated among our members. The Governor's commitment to the free enterprise system and his conservative fiscal posture are also recognized and appreciated by our members.

Additionally, E. Michael Rosser, CMB, CML, presented a Society Fellow award from the Society of Certified Mortgage Bankers to Robert B. Ferguson, Jr. of Lone Tree, Colorado for his contribution to the CMB program and his years of dedication to the education programs of MBA. Bob entered the mortgage banking business with the Cameron and Brown company in Charlotte, North Carolina; he later worked for Wachovia Mortgage and Mercantile Mortgage in St. Louis before assuming the position of President and CEO for Security Pacific Mortgage in Denver. Bob has been a member of MBA's executive committee, legislative committee, and was in the first class of CMB's.
