June is National Homeownership Month!

Empowering consumers through education was one of the highlights of President Bush’s speech on March 26, 2004, when discussing his initiatives in increasing homeownership opportunities for the American public.

In observation of June as National Homeownership month, each state, organization, and community is celebrating the good fortune of homeownership opportunities. Through providing education to consumers and to professionals, the CMLA has joined in this effort and contributed to the quality of lending performed by our members.

Recent CMLA initiatives that reflect President Bush’s Blueprint "map" include:

CMLA is partnering with Colorado Association of Realtors, insurance companies, nonprofits, and local board of Realtors to coordinate the Keys to Homeownership Festival June 26. The Festival will provide education, resources for lending, and access to many real estate companies, to consumers.

On May 22, the CMLA co-coordinated the Health and Housing Fair, convened by Rep. Debbie Stafford. The event drew the attention of young families with children who were interested in first time homeownership opportunities. CMLA invited organizations such as City of Aurora Homeownership Assistance Program, Rocky Mountain Mutual Housing, Eagle Appraisal, Citywide Financial, Cherry Creek Mortgage, Coldwell Banker Real Estate, Stapleton, and Metro Brokers to share their experience and knowledge with attendees. Fannie Mae contributed to the creation of this event.

The Don’t Borrow Trouble Campaign was launched May 17 at Mile High United Way. The CMLA was proud to have contributed to the financing, marketing and infrastructure development of the campaign. Freddie Mac, United Way, CMLA and other organizations announced the 211 phone system as a way for consumers to acquire education on how to avoid predatory lending practices.

To date, the CMLA statewide Consumer Help Line has served approximately 575 consumers regarding origination, servicing and member verification.

The "face" of CMLA is represented each time a CMLA member contributes to their community, closes a first-time homebuyer loan, and acts on the CMLA’s mission of "practice of integrity based lending". We have met President Bush’s challenge of empowering consumers through education through our initiatives.
